What has now become the longest government shutdown in American History, is impacting Maryland residents directly.

Maryland officials estimate the ongoing federal government shutdown is affecting approximately 172,000 residents in the state. There are some 245,000 federal employees in the state of Maryland, with 90,000 having been furloughed or working without pay.

Estimates are that half of the state’s 164,000 federal contractors have been affected by the shutdown and are unlikely to be repaid once the government reopens.
