Most folks at some point in their lives, get to visit the beautiful Island of Hawaii.  You may go to Ohau, The Big Island, Maui or one of the other islands.

Well, now when you visit, there is something you won’t be able to do.

That is look at your mobile device while crossing the street or Hawaii.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed the Mobile Device Crosswalk Law at a busy intersection a few days ago making it illegal to cross the street or highway while reading a mobile device.

The law goes into effect October 25, giving police time to explain the situation to people who can’t take their eyes off that tiny screen in their hands.

It’s called The “distracted pedestrian” law.  Mayor Kirk said it is very needed because so many people in the city — especially seniors — are hit by vehicles in crosswalks,
This law is like the “jaywalking” law, Police will have to actually observe somebody looking at their device to make an arrest. Fines will be $15 to $35 for the first offense, $35 to $75 for the second, and $75 to $99 for the third. It will still be legal to talk on your phone while crossing a street, or to look at your phone on the sidewalk, but just don’t bury your head in the phone while crossing the street!! especially in traffic!!!
