The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel from Norfolk to the Eastern Shore of Virginia is over 17 miles long of bridge alone with two tunnels in between, and it is the longest bridge-tunnel extension in the world and is what some call the 8th Wonder of the World.  It is a marvelous structure to behold; one that I’ve crossed many times during my lifetime.

But yesterday, the Bridge-Tunnel became a death trap for one Tractor-trailer driving.  While crossing the bridge-tunnel extension on Thursday, High Winds because a major issue, and it blew the Tractor-trailer off the bridge into the water.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Corinne Zilnicki says the tractor-trailer was blown off the bridge shortly before 12:30 p.m. and the driver was rescued a little after 1.

Winds on the bridge-tunnel were about 40 mph Thursday, although Anderson says they had been much higher earlier in the day.
The Driver’s name has not yet been released.
