This past Saturday — two of the nation’s top Black Colleges, ironically with the same initials and both calling themselves “THE REAL HU” – Howard University and Hampton University met in a classic MEAC Football game held at R.F.K. Stadium here in Washington, D.C.  At the beginning of this classic matchup was a surprising show of unity when then entire Howard University Cheering Squad refuse to stand for the National Anthem and instead they all fell to one knee.

In contrasting  jestures the Howard Football team members didn’t kneel, but instead all raised their fist in silent protest.

The refusal to stand stemmed from the silent protest by San Francisco 49er’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick who is protesting the racial problems in the United States.   Other professional athletes have joined Kaepernick with his refusal to stand and now it’s gone far beyond just athletes, now folks in the stands and even the Cheerleaders have joined in with the protest.

Howard by the way lost the game to visiting Hampton University; so until the next time, I guess Hampton is now “THE REAL HU.”
