My Baltimore Spirit Listen Live

What could have turned out to be a major local and national catastrophe turned out to be a safe haven for 20 elementary school students.  On Tuesday, the school bus they were riding caught fire and before anyone was hurt, the bus driver Reneita Smith managed to get every student off the bus and to safety with anyone hurt.

Neighbors described seeing flames coming from the wheel area and said they saw two tires burst into flames.  Ms. Smith said when the students were all off the bus, neighbors got involved and took all the students to safe places in the backyards of neighoring houses.

“I ran back onto the bus, to make sure that every seat was clear, as the bus in the back was on fire,” Smith said.

She described them as “My Babies,” and said had to get them all off.
