The  National Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. is fastly approaching the opening date and it has become probably the most anticipated opening of any Smithsonian Museum in American History.  The opening date is September 24 and the Smithsonian is expecting more than 150,000 to attend the opening weekend alone!!    Free time-entry passes for that same weekend have been so popular that they have given out twice.

The museum is so popular that they have had to extend the hours for the opening weekend and an additonal 80,000 passes for the opening weekend were gobbled up in minutes.

President Barack Obama will officially dedicate the museum on Sept. 24 for opening day.  Even though there are no passes left for that day, the ceremony can be watched live from the Washington Monument and on Jumbotrons around the area. The museum’s website will also stream the events live.

Free timed-entry passes are still available for dates in November and December. Visitors can also wait until Sept. 26 to get same-day passes, which are first-come, first-served at the museum or online starting at 9:15 a.m.
