A Catholic Priest in St. Mary’s County, Maryland has been indicted on 20 counts of bank fraud.  Priest John S. Mattingly who was the Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Leonardtown, Maryland is charged with depositing more than 500 checks worth more than $76,000 into his personal account.

The $76,000 he is accused of taking was given to the Church for the “Poor Box”. to help those in need; instead Pastor Mattingly deposited the money into his own account to increase his Retirement Account.

Incidences like this with Pastor’s and other Church Officials misconduct is what give Today’s Churches a Very bad reputation.  One has to remember that this is not the Churches doing, it’s an individual’s conduct that is punishable as a serious crime.

Former Pastor Mattingly faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for each of the 20 counts of bank fraud.
