Officials are urging individuals who had any interaction with the infected raccoon or whose pets had contact with it to reach out to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health at 410-222-7254 or 443-481-3140 for after-hours assistance. Additionally, pet owners are advised to inspect their animals for unexplained wounds, as rabies can be transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals.

The Department of Health is recommending several precautions to prevent rabies transmission, including ensuring that all pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, not permitting pets to roam freely, securing outdoor garbage in covered containers to deter wildlife, refraining from leaving pet food outdoors, avoiding contact with wildlife, particularly feral cats, raccoons, bats, and foxes, and in the event of a bite or scratch from a suspected rabid animal, immediately washing the wound with soap and water and seeking medical attention.
