Big Ten Basketball Tournament - Semifinals

For more than 20 years, two cross-town College Basketball Powerhouses would not play each other, to the dismay of the local fans, students and media; and still to this day it is not clear why; but after consulting those in the Maryland and Georgetown inner circle, I think I know the reason why.

But now that they are playing, many in the DC/MD/VA local area are very happy.  This year was the second annual Maryland/Georgetown inner city classic as some would call it.  They alternate each year on each other’s home court.  Last year on the Maryland Campus, Maryland won a close game in the first contest.  Now it’s year #2 so the home game moves to Georgetown and they home court is the Verizon Center in Downtown D.C.

With a capacity crowd on hand, Georgetown led by 9 with 2 and a half minutes left.  Maryland fought back and with 7 seconds remaining, Maryland Shooting guart Melo Trimble sank two free throws to give Maryland the close victory 76-75.

“We beat a great team tonight,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. “Except for fouling, we really guarded well.”

Next year the game moves back to the Infinity Center on the Maryland College Park Campus.
