It opens this weekend — The Movie “Hands of Stone” — written and directed by Venezuelan-born Jonathan Jakubowicz, is intended to tell the story of the controversial and sometimes strange life of Light Heavyweight Champion Roberta Doran.

The Associated Press voted him the greatest lightweight of the 20th century, while Ring Magazine voted him the fifth best fighter of all time, behind Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis; but was he greater than Sugar Ray Leonard; was he greater than “Hitman” Thomas Hearns; and was he greater than “Iron” Mike Tyson?  These questions remained to be unanswered in this movie “Hands of Stone.”

Duran being played by Edgar Ramirez and Sugar Ray Leonard being played by R&B Singer “Usher” also features Award Winner Robert DeNiro who plays the American Trainer to Roberto Duran.

As well as the story is told about the life and career of Roberto Duran, he is still only remembered for his fight with Sugar Ray Leonard in the Louisiana Superdome, and after taking a beating from Leonard, Duran’s famous words “No Mas” came forth meaning “No More.”  Duran had quit in the middle of a welterweight title Rematch fight!

Movie Experts say the 1 hour 45 minute movie tries to tell a lot of his life in a short period of time, but is well worth going to see.

Personally, I was glad to see that Sugar Ray Leonard was so much included in this movie because of the personal friendship with Ray and his entire family; it goes to show his dominance in the fight and shows just how strong is legacy is.

I highly recommend “Hands of Stone” even though it’s not about Sugar Ray Leonard – but it is about “Sugar Ray Leonard”!!
