As the DMV slept throughout the night, for some in the Silver Spring area, the night wasn’t so pleasant as an Apartment Building in Silver Spring, Maryland on Piney Branch Avenue exploded and caught fire.  According to FOX 5 News – 16 people have lost their lives and some 30 more people have been taken to local hospitals.  Still 5 to 7 people are still missing and unaccounted for.

Two four story Apartment Buildings located at 8701 and 8703 Piney Branch Road were heavily damaged from the explosion and fire remain shut down early this morning.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said there are also some injuries to his Firefighters with minor injuries.  Chief Goldstein has also said that over 90 people (residents) have been displaced and are being housed at the Long Branch Community Center.

Traffic in the area of University Boulevard at Piney Branch is pretty much non-existent.  Piney Branch Road and Arliss Road will likely remain closed for the remainder of the day.

If the Piney Branch corridor is your route coming or going to work or school, alter your route this morning and go another way because this whole area is in emergency mode and will be for a few days to com.
