Norfolk deputies are warning citizens about a phone scam in which someone has been impersonating a sheriff’s deputy and asking for money.
The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that citizens have received fraudulent calls informing them that they have missed jury duty and must pay a court fee or spend a day in jail.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kaila DeRiengo says residents have been told to pay $1,000 on a prepaid card while on the phone. The individual on the phone has told people that if they hang up, he will send a dispatch a unit to arrest them.
The sheriff’s office says jury duty correspondence is always sent through the mail and that deputies would never call asking for money.
People who receive similar calls are encouraged to contact authorities.
