Zoe Saldana

Think sequins are only for the holidays? Think again.

In the magazine's recent issue, the "Star Trek Beyond" star opens up about race, motherhood and Nina Simone.

During Thursday's edition of NewsOne Now, Roland Martin and his panel of guests discussed the backlash over Saldana's portrayal of Simone and the subsequent discussion of colorism within the African-American community.

At this point, we're not really sure what the film's selling point is... but maybe inquiring minds will go out to see how controversy plays out on screen.

After Saldana tried to salvage the controversy by quoting the late artist on Twitter, the estate asked her to "take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life." The estate continued to grieve over the film on Twitter, calling it "painful."

Nina Simone's legacy will be introduced to new audiences when the film, Nina, starring Zoe Saldana, is released in theaters next month. The biopic tells the story of Simone's relationship with her nurse-turned-manager Clifton Henderson and will highlight the later years of Simone's tumultuous life.

The NAACP Image Awards will air live this Friday at 9/8c on TV One and all this week on NewsOne Now, an expert panel will share our predictions on who will take home the trophies.
