The first daughter is growing up fast. 17-year-old Malia Obama is graduating high school today in Washington D.C.

The President and First Lady wrote a letter that will be given to Ali's family by White House Senior Advisor, Valerie Jarrett.

The 17-year-old will not head directly to the university in Cambridge, Massachusetts after graduating from Sidwell Friends this spring, she “will take a gap year before beginning school,” reads the statement from the East Wing. Instead, she will enroll in the fall of 2017.

However, the 17-year-old is taking a year off before she attends the Ivy League university.
