Trump Suggests Federal Takeover of New York City and Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump sharply criticized New York City’s upcoming mayoral race on Tuesday, singling out Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, whom he described as a “communist.” He expressed concerns about the city’s future under certain leadership, stating, “We’re not going to have, if a communist gets elected to run New York, it can never be the same. But we have tremendous power at the White House to run places when we have to.”

whom he labeled a “communist.” He warned that electing Mamdani would lead to irreversible damage: “If a communist gets elected to run New York, it can never be the same. But we have tremendous power at the White House to run places when we have to.”
Trump didn’t stop with New York. He also voiced frustration with the state of Washington, D.C., implying the federal government could take control there as well. “We could run D.C. We’re looking at D.C. We don’t want crime in D.C. We want the city to run well,” he said, noting that his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, had been in talks with Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Despite Trump’s alarm, data from the Metropolitan Police Department shows crime in Washington has declined. Violent crime is down 25%, and overall crime is down 8% from the previous year. Still, Trump insisted federal leadership would be more effective: “We would run it so good, it would be run so proper, we’d get the best person to run it. And we know the crime would be down to a minimum.”
Trump also aimed at New York City’s ranked-choice voting system and referred to his relationship with current Mayor Eric Adams as a “test.” He closed with a vow: “New York City will run properly. We’re going to bring New York back.”
Under the 1973 Home Rule Act, Washington, D.C., has limited autonomy, with Congress retaining oversight of its laws and budget. Trump’s comments have reignited debates over federal intervention in local governance.
