As we are already back in the throws of school and routine I’ve noticed how people are making adjustments for their new schedules. Parents make their children go to bed earlier, they limit their television time, their homework must be finished before they can play, no sleepovers during the week, etc. They do this because they know that without routine their life will be stressful and unorganized. Anything that will help eliminate stress in my own life is greatly welcomed! But why do we really need routines in our daily life? It seems that life would be so much more fun if we lived spontaneously without consequences. Yes, it seems that way, but in reality we need to know exactly what is expected of us. We need boundaries. We are creatures of habit. Our children may hate the fact that there are rules to follow, but studies show that those rules aid in self confidence when they are followed.

As a parent, if I want my son to behave a certain way then I must model that behavior in front of him. Webster’s definition of an example is a pattern or model, as of something to be imitated or avoided. I have to be an example over and over again until it becomes habit for him. I have to be consistent. Routine breeds consistency, consistency breeds habit, and habit breeds a lifestyle. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “For everything there is a season, and a time for everything under heaven. I am convinced we need family routines where we make time to be together, to laugh with each other, and to eat dinner together. Yes, I’m still an advocate of eating at the table with your family. This consistency will teach you how to enjoy your children and how to deal with them the right way. I also believe that we should have spiritual routines. We should talk to God and read His Word everyday. How terrible if I only spoke to my husband on Sundays. My marriage would be over. Take time everyday to chat with God and then listen to hear what He says back to you. This consistent routine will teach you to know God’s voice and His character. I used to hate routine. Now I realize it’s not so bad after all!
