(Washington, DC)  —  Lawmakers on Capitol Hill yesterday hinted that DC Public Schools could see a cut in federal funding if a federal voucher program isn’t brought back.  A Senate committee led by independent Senator Joe Lieberman and Republican Susan Collins held a hearing and made clear they wanted to see the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program return, and if that happened, the city’s public and charter schools would also stand to gain.  The program was suspended after the Obama administration took office, though students already enrolled in it continue to keep annual vouchers through graduation.  House Speaker John Boehner is also a voucher proponent.  DC Mayor Vincent Gray and Council Chairman Kwame Brown both testified, with Gray coming out against the vouchers, but Brown saying he was now for them.
