DC Public Schools Students Return to Class
Backpacks are packed, pencils are sharpened and classrooms are open once again as DC Public Schools students officially return to school Monday, Aug. 24.
The first day marks the beginning of the 2026-27 school year for DCPS students across the District. Pre-K students will have a later start, with their first day scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, according to the official DCPS calendar.
District leaders are also marking the occasion. Mayor Muriel Bowser is scheduled to join DCPS, the Department of General Services and community leaders Monday at the newly renamed John R. Thompson, Jr. High School in Ward 3. The celebration includes a ribbon-cutting for the latest addition to the expanded school.
Ahead of opening day, the District also encouraged residents, community organizations and faith groups to help welcome students back by cheering them on as they arrived for their first day.
