Gospel powerhouse Kim Burrell’s mother was born on November 24, which lands on Thanksgiving Day tomorrow, and died around this time three years ago. During a candid conversation, the ‘I See A Victory’ singer revealed the holidays bring a bitter/ sweet feeling, but despite her mother’s passing, Kim and her family are reminded of her glory when Kim whips up her mother’s famous cornbread dressing.
“In my family I am the go-to. We all eat dinner at my house,” she revealed during a candid chat. “[My mother] taught me how to make her cornbread dressing, so everyone always looks forward to that dish because it’s like a little piece of momma all over again.”
Kim isn’t giving up her mother’s coveted recipe, but recommends “cooking with love” when preparing your family dinner. “I love people who cook food really, really quickly just to get it done. I like people to take their time and put love and consideration and that’s what makes holiday eating so great for us. Mom always did that with love and consideration for all her kids. She fixed all of our favorite dish, it just so happens to be her dressing was all of out favorite.”
And just in case you aren’t known as the chef in your family, Kim has this advice for you.
“Experiment. Start with something small. Don’t get a huge turkey and cover it in Crisco because you don’t know what to do with it. Go to Pinterest. Look up some of those help sites. It’s so therapeutic and so much fun. it feels like such an accomplishment if you follow all the directions. Make one dish and shock the family when you take it over there. And if you can’t cook take a lot of love to the gathering.”
If all else fails,” bring something someone else made.”
Kim is promoting her inspiring single ‘I See Victory” off the ‘Hidden Figures’ soundtrack.
“It is the triumphant story and the ending of the resolve of these women and their smarts and what they contributed to the history of the United States of America and the world forever. You can do anything you put your heart and your mind too,” she said. “this movie made me accept the inevitable greatness that God game me. That’s what I want people to walk away knowing, they have greatness.”
Stay tuned for Part 2 when she tells us all about making the Pharrell produced single.
