It hasn’t been a good seven days for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

He flopped at the first presidential debate; said that basically all “Blacks are living in hell;” called former beauty queen Alicia Machado “fat,” had a complete utter meltdown on Twitter at 3:30am suggesting that folks look up a sex tape and suggested in a recent rally that Hillary Clinton may have cheated on her husband, former President Bill Clinton.  It’s no wonder why recent poll numbers in key swing states are swinging toward his opponent.

And now it’s the The New York Times turn to add to his troubling week.

On Saturday night, the reputable newspaper published an eye-opening report stating that the reality star may not have paid taxes in 18 years. Yes, you read that correctly: Eighteen years. And The Times has the receipts to back up their claim—they obtained Trump’s 1995 tax records and included quoted experts in their report, Reuters noted.

But how is it possible to get away with avoiding one’s taxes for so long? Well, the business man declared a $916 million loss to the IRS, which could have allowed him to legally skip paying federal income taxes for years, the Times explained. (But we thought he was a brilliant at business?)

Trump’s refusal to release his current tax returns have been a vulnerability, a vulnerability that Clinton pounced on during the first debate accusing him of hiding them from the public because he probably doesn’t pay any income tax. And in the same fashion, Clinton was swift to react to the Times piece reminding Americans how hypocritical and detrimental it is when billionaires don’t pay their fare share.

Trump reacted to the piece as well, Tweeting:

On Saturday night, the Trump campaign put out an official statement saying that the GOP nominee has paid hundreds of millions of dollars in other taxes, including property and real estate taxes, CNN wrote

The only news here is that the more than 20-year-old alleged tax document was illegally obtained, a further demonstration that The New York Times, like establishment media in general, is an extension of the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party and their global special interests,” the statement said.

Trump surrogates were quick to defend their candidate on the Sunday morning news cycle

This is a perfectly legal application of the tax code. And he would have been fool not to take advantage of it,” Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, said on ABC program “This Week.”

He’s a genius at how to take advantage of legal remedies that can help your company survive and grow,” he added.

Chris Christie, the New Jersey governor and head of Trump’s presidential transition team, said Trump is the best person to fix our nation’ tax codes.

There’s no one who has shown more genius in their way to maneuver about the tax code as he rightfully used the laws to do that,” Christie told “Fox News Sunday.”

Of course, Twitter sounded off as well:

Time will only tell if this “October surprise” will impact his poll numbers. But, we’ll just be over here like this, waiting for the fallout.
