The mother of slain Bronx teen Ramarley Graham is demanding justice in the case of her son, who was shot and killed at the hands of NYPD officer Richard Haste in 2012. Constance Malcolm was critical about the ongoing Justice Department investigation and accused the Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara‘s office of “dragging their feet.”
This Tuesday marks four years since Officer Haste chased Graham into his home and shot the unarmed teen. While Haste was originally indicted for killing Graham, the indictment was thrown out in June 2012 on a technicality. Another grand jury was assembled but failed to indict the officer.
The New York Daily News reports:
“This case is just lingering and we don’t know what’s going on,” Graham’s mother, Constance Malcolm, told The News. “Nobody’s telling us. They’re dragging their feet.”
“Ramarley’s killing was a clear violation of his civil rights,” she continued. “It’s time for Preet Bharara to prioritize this case and move forward.”
Bharara’s office declined to comment on the investigation.
The family of Graham and others planned a series of protests at Bahara’s Lower Manhattan office, beginning with a vigil at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The protesters then say they’ll move to occupy a space in front of Bahara’s office at 1 St. Andrew’s Plaza overnight to Wednesday morning.
“We just want the message clear that you’re on notice,” said Malcolm in a talk with the Daily News. “The foot dragging is unacceptable. We will not allow that to be swept under the rug.”
Surprisingly, Malcolm is teaching her youngest son, who witnessed the shooting of his brother, to not have a hatred towards police officers according to the Daily News report.
