The family of 11-year-old La’Darious Wylie is celebrating his life after he died saving his 7-year-old sister in a fatal hit-and-run in North Carolina.
La’Darious and his sister Sha’Vonta were waiting for the school bus on the morning of Oct. 27 when a car veered off the road and towards the children. Without hesitation, the fifth grader pushed Sha’Vonta out of the way and was struck by the vehicle, The Charlotte Observer reports.
La’Darious died the next day at a local hospital.
A candlelight vigil was held for him on Saturday.
Michelle Johnson, the driver of the vehicle, was caught last Thursday by authorities and charged with felony hit and run resulting in death. She was released the following day after posting a $25,000 bond. If convicted, the 57-year-old faces up to 25 years in prison.
La’Darious’ mother, Elizabeth McCrorey, said his six siblings miss him dearly and will forever remember him as a hero. Residents of the Chester, NC area are hoping to rename a park in his honor.
The Charlotte Observer reports:
Still, with a funeral set for 3 p.m. Thursday at Browns Chapel AME Zion Church in Chester for her son, McCrorey said that she and her other six children must endure and live on. McCrorey repeated what she has told so many people since Johnson was arrested: ‘I don’t hate her – I just wish she had stopped.”
La’Darious’ heroic actions have led some in Chester to push for renaming the city’s Brooklyn Park – just down the street from where La’Darious died, and where he played all his life – in his honor. The Joshua Lodge civic group and others have started a petition online with plans to present the park name idea to city leaders.
A GoFundMe was created to help cover funeral expenses. The family passed their goal this week by receiving over $20,000 in seven days.
