(Washington, DC)  -The new Martin Luther King Jr. national memorial is set to open this morning. The 28-foot-tall white granite statue of the civil rights leader is the first memorial on the National Mall to pay tribute to a non-President.  It’s also the first memorial there to honor an African-American.  President Obama is set to speak at a formal memorial dedication ceremony on Sunday, the 48th anniversary of King’s iconic “I have a dream” speech from the steps of the nearby Lincoln memorial.  Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to attend.
