Beginning this weekend on January 1st, drivers who receive traffic tickets in Maryland will have three options to respond to the citation. Under a new state law, drivers must notify District Court within 30 days of receiving the ticket if they will pay the fine, request a waiver hearing or request a trial date. If drivers do not make a choice, the Motor Vehicle Administration will be notified and may suspend the driver’s license. The law does not apply to traffic citations for “must appear” offenses like drunk driving.
