Longevity & Marriage Part 4: Finances

Finances is one of the biggest relationship stressors and therefore one of the top reasons for divorce. Here’s what worked for us in our marriage.

  1. Be transparent about your financial situation. Discuss your strengths and weaknesses regarding money. Build a plan to keep the strengths going and work on the weaknesses one at a time.
  2. Build a legacy for your future generations. Proverbs 13:22 says “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children.”
  3. Build your joint monthly budget. We use the 50/20/20/10 formula (50% of income goes towards bills, 20% to savings & debt, 20% to leisure and 10% to tithes).
  4. Prioritize what’s important! A penny saved is a penny earned. Look through your bills and see where there’s waste. Cut what’s not important.
