Which Medicare Health Plan is better for You?

Many Medicare beneficiaries are confused about various types of health plans they can use to supplement their government benefits. While they appreciate getting health benefits, they know that the plan will not cover every service. So many seniors and disabled people are interested in finding a plan that can help them maximize their health coverage and control costs.

Some questions are pretty general, and these might include – Are Medicare Supplements Better Than Medicare Advantage? Others may be more specific, like which plan will be better for people with a specific health issue.  And mostly, plan beneficiaries are worried about costs. They worry about plan premiums and future out of pocket costs.

The Best Plans for You!

It is not possible to give everybody one simple answer. There are many individual factors that would influence your decision. You have to figure out your budget, lifestyle, current health status, and of course, the way you prefer to access health services.

One other important thing to note is that available plans will vary by your own location. The Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage plan that your sister is very happy with may not even be on the market in your city or town. Or if it is, the price and covered services may be very different.

So before you start figuring out which plan you should select, you have to understand what you want out of your coverage and how much you can budget for it. Then you need to find out which plans you can enroll in where you live.

Medicare Advantage (MA) vs. Medicare Supplements

You also need to understand that MA plans are very different than supplements.  A supplement works with original Medicare to cover deductibles and copayments. An MA plan will be used instead of the original plan. Take some time to understand how these plans work so you can begin to figure out which one you will be comfortable with.

Also note that, all MA plans or supplements are not the same. They come with different coverage options, prices, and out of pocket costs.  Some cover almost all medical services at 100%. Others require the member to pay deductibles and copayments.  Some may also include some extra benefits, called value added services, and they may be very valuable to you.  Extra benefits or services like gym club memberships, transportation to the doctor, or dental plans may be very important.

The monthly premiums are a big concern with most customers. Plans that cover services and provide the most flexibility may be very expensive. Lots of seniors and disabled people have to make do on a limited income, so they cannot afford the monthly premiums. Others may come with low, or even no additional premiums. Some may even reduce the Medicare Part B premium that is withdrawn from most social security checks.

So you have to balance the price against the coverage. Some people would rather pay more every month for the security that other medical costs can be controlled. Others would rather pay less every month and handle out of pocket costs as they arise.
