In the Washington, D.C. area, there were, and still is great basketball players and coaches!!!

Coaches like Gary Williams, Maryland, John Thompson, Georgetown; John Thompson, III; Georgetown, Lefty Drissel, Maryland, Kevin Broadus, UDC & Wil Jones; UDC; all great and famous college coaches.

But one name stands out in the High School Ranks!!  That’s the name of Morgan Wootten.  He coached at Dematha Catholic High School for 46 years.

Over the years, Mogan Wootten put out many NBA Stars such as Adrian Dantley, Jarret Jackson, Kenny Carr, Sherman Douglas and many many more.

Morgan Wootten died yesterday with his family at his side.  He was 88.

He had a stellar career at DeMatha Catholic.   1,274 career victories, 33 WCAC titles and five mythical national championships,  Morgan Wootten became the first high school coach ever inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

The Wootten Family is saddened to share the news that their loving husband and father Morgan Wootten passed away yesterday evening at 9:50pm. Morgan was surrounded by his family in prayer and passed away peacefully as he wished.
