The GMWA was founded by Rev. James Cleveland in March of 1967 in Detroit, Michigan. The first National Convention took place in August of 1968 in Detroit, Michigan. That’s also where the first Mass Choir was formed with over 250 people. The purpose of the organization is to give musicians & singers a platform for gospel music presentations. Rev. Cleveland’s dream was for this organization to be a “floating university” where people could be taught and learn the principles and elements of gospel music.
