Maybe I was the only excited about Hollywood’s biggest night?
The Oscars television audience dropped to an all-time low this past Sunday, despite great hosting duties by ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel. With viewership at only 26.5 million viewers, according to Nielson ratings, the show recorded an all-time low. The previous low was set in 2008 with 32 million.
The huge decline for the 90th Academy Awards can partly be attributed to the challenge that all major television events are facing: the popularity of streaming online video. With so many programming options, even a major awards show telecast that is arguably the most-watched entertainment program of the year can no longer be considered the go-to choice for viewers. And the real time accessibility of social media “highlights” also makes for a smaller viewership. Who among us doesn’t enjoy the random musings of social media?
Either way, it is clear that the times are changing. Maybe it’s the type of movies being celebrated, maybe it’s the viewer. Only time will see if award shows like the Oscars will be able to continue to stand the test of technology. But I would say 90 years is a pretty good indicator that the show is not going anywhere.
