Strong Faith

“Without the word of God, we can’t go on,” says Olga. She lives with her 72-year-old husband in Cajamarca, Peru. Each morning she wakes, lights the fire, cooks, and then starts work in the fields, trying to tease the crops from tired soil.

For Olga and her husband, time is running out. A lifetime of hard work has left her husband ill, weakened, and frustrated. In her old age, Olga fears losing the battle to support herself. So when she speaks of needing God to sustain her, she means it.

Olga worries about being alone. Sometimes she asks God, “When will you take me?” But she is not giving up, and her faith remains strong and defiant. Despite these difficulties, she is a woman characterised by hope. Tearfund’s partner Warmis is supporting Olga as she works to overcome her struggles.

Reflect:

Pray:

Lord, I pray that my prosperity will not lead me to trust in my possessions. Help me to realize that my hope should be in you. May I see that my prosperity is evidence of your faithfulness. Strengthen me to use my possessions and power to, with you, uphold the cause of the oppressed and feed the hungry. Amen.

Psalms 146:5-7
5Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God:
6Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:
7Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners:
