Printed Text: Galatians 4:8-20

Key Verse: Galatians 4:9 (NIV)

But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?

UNIFYING LESSON PRINCIPLE:

People are tempted to sacrifice freedom in order to gain a sense of security. What are the dangers of this trade-off? Paul rebuked the Galatians for trading the freedom that Christ gives for slavery to religious legalism.

CONCLUDING REFLECTION:

We cannot read this epistle without noticing Paul’s love for the Galatian people shining through. Though his writing to them is stern, it still comes from a place of a loving rebuke. There are those in our lives who carry the posture and spirit of the Galatians. They could be children, other family members, spouses, employees and so forth. They have seemingly turned away from something we gave them in purity and in love. Rather than reject them as foolish, let us offer to them in their lives the same grace that Paul’s letter offered to the Galatians—the same grace God offers to us in our lives.

PRAYER:

Lord, thank you for the freedom of your Gospel. Teach us to receive freely the grace of your Word, your will, and your way. We do not want to trade in that freedom for anything of this world that we think can provide safety, stability, or security. Remind us that we can only find those things in you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
