Keesha Sharp brings her effortless acting skills to her role as Trish Murtaugh, Roger Murtaugh’s (Damon Wayans) wife, on the TV reboot of the cult classic.
As the mother of a newborn, Keesha owns her sexy in the bedroom, while maintaining her household and family.
We caught up with the veteran actress, who dished on landing the role, working with Damon and more.
HelloBeautiful: What was the casting process like to land the role of Trish Murtaugh?
Keesha Sharp: I went in for this project as a normal audition, on tape with casting. I didn’t get the part initially, so I had to let it go, although I really wanted this one. I ended up testing for 2 other pilots, neither of which worked out. Then out of the blue, I got a call from my team telling me I had booked the pilot for Lethal Weapon.
HB: What was it like working with Damon Wayans?
Keesha: He is a sweetheart to me and is so funny! it is just natural to him. But don’t let him fool you, he can be very charming and dramatic which is what works so well on this show.
HB: How was it to film certain sensual scenes with Damon?
Keesha: As actors, we are all used to it. To be honest, he kept making me laugh and we had so much fun.
HB: How have roles for Black women on television changed in the recent years?
Keesha: I have been so thankful to see the roles for Black women change recently. There used to be only stereotypical roles and even those were few and far between. We have women now like Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), Annalise Keating (Viola Davis), Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) and Terri LaCroix (Regina King). So many different examples of female characters. This is the first time that I think it isn’t a trend but a permanent reality.
HB: What was your experience working on American Crime Story? Are you coming back for the next season of American Crime?
Keesha: It was really an amazing experience. Almost all of my scenes were with Courtney B. Vance so he and I bonded during that time. It was really fun working with him and the amazing directors–Ryan Murphy, Anthony Hemingway and John Singleton–they are all so talented and I was inspired. As for the next season of ACS, I will have to see if I can do it along with my ‘Lethal Weapon’ commitment. I know it will be another amazing project so I hope it works out for me to be a part of it.
HB: What was a memorable moment on set?
Keesha: There were many memorable moments on set. One that I will mention, is the episode called “Race Card” directed by John Singleton. The reason it was memorable was we shot at Second Baptist Church which was the Cochran’s real church. We even sat in the seats they would sit in every Sunday. Having the real members come up to us and tell us that we looked like Dale and Johnnie and to have Rev Doc William Epps say a prayer as he did for Johnnie during the actual trial was special.
HB: Do you ever think there will be a ‘Girlfriends’ reunion?
Keesha: It’s looking more and more unlikely. For years, people had toyed with a movie but now it seems distant. But hey, if Sex and the City can do it we can too. I guess if the fans really wanted it and made it known to Mara Brock Akil and CBS Paramount, then it could still happen.
Catch Keesha Sharp on ‘Lethal Weapon’ Wednesday nights at 8 on FOX.
