Following the death of Freddie Gray, the city of Baltimore has been in a state of turmoil regarding social injustices and police brutality.

A Baltimore city school police officer has been placed on leave without pay after a video of him repeatedly slapping and kicking a student went viral after being posted on Facebook. In the 11-second clip, the officer curses at a 16-year-old boy while hitting him in the head. The officer nor the student has yet to be identified and the context of the situation that led to the beating is currently unknown.

Lauren Geisser is representing the victim who is a 10th grade student at REACH Partnership School. She told NBC News that her client sustained multiple injuries and has been “traumatized” as a result of the situation.

Baltimore City Public Schools has released a statement calling it a “deeply concerning encounter.” The incident is currently under investigation by the State’s Attorney’s office.

Upon viewing the footage, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said, “Any time there is a law enforcement officer with that level of authority that seems to be abusing that authority, it impacts all of us across the country,” she said, “It’s not helpful, as we work to build bridges of trust, to see that level of mistreatment”.

Stay tuned for the latest developments in the story.
