The Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway is slowly reopening, but the Outer Loop remains shut down hours after a tractor-trailer truck crashed through a median and flipped onto its side between Connecticut Avenue and Route 355 in the early hours of Friday. The driver was killed; fuel and debris were scattered across the entire road.

The accident happened shortly before 5 a.m.    As of 8 a.m., the three right lanes of the Inner Loop has been reopened.

The drivers on the Outer Loop are being diverted onto Connecticut Avenue.  The ramp to the Beltway is also closed.

Traffic on southbound Interstate 270 can get on the Inner Loop as of 7:45 a.m.; it had been diverted at Old Georgetown Road.
The cab detached from the frame of the truck and crashed through the median wall; the driver was ejected from the cab, says Pete Piringer, with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. The driver was ejected from the cab and taken to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries. He later died; he has not yet been identified.

The investigation will continue at least through the morning rush hour, since reconstruction teams must do their work before cleanup can even begin, NBC Washington’s Megan McGrath  said at about 7:30 a.m., adding, “There’s a lot of fuel on the pavement.”

Cargo also spilled on both sides of the road, but Piringer says the cargo is not hazardous. He added that the Outer Loop would be closed “for hours.”
