Some prominent District of Columbia African-American churches are opposing a plan to build a protected bike lane that could cut into street parking spaces near the churches.
The Washington Post reports over 300 people attended the District Department of Transportation community meeting Saturday to discuss the proposed bike lanes that would connect Washington’s Shaw neighborhood to downtown.
The city is considering four options for the project.
Many churches potentially in the path of the bike lanes say they’ve seen historic black churches flee the District for the suburbs because of parking constraints. They say the bike lanes are a sign they could be next.
DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo says they’re trying to strike the right balance for all the modes and users of transportation, and protect the community interest.
