Airline travel in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast could be severely disrupted this weekend if weather forecasters are right about the approaching winter storm.

“If the forecast holds, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are almost certain to result in massive cancellations,” said Ben Abramson, Travel Editor for USA Today. “If you’re holding tickets for those days, contact your airline immediately to change your plans.”  Airlines including American, Delta, Southwest, Jetblue and others are issuing travel waivers, which allow passengers to change flights without paying fees.

Travelers could sit tight and keep an eye on the weather forecast, but Abramson said it’s better to be proactive.

“If you get canceled, you’ll either be issued a refund or a chance to re-book, but it’s really best to not let it come to that,” Abramson says, warning that first flights out fill up fast after canceled flights.
