District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser says the city is unlikely to start handing out $1,000 speeding tickets.
The District Department of Transportation has proposed the steep fines for people going 25 mph or more over the posted speed.
During an appearance Tuesday on NewsChannel 8’s “NewsTalk” program, Bowser said, “I don’t think you’re going to see those.”
The D.C. Council is planning to examine the proposed fines, which do not require council approval. AAA Mid-Atlantic has said the fines would be among the highest in the nation and questioned whether they were aimed at raising revenue more than deterring dangerous driving.
The Democratic mayor said her administration remains committed to eliminating pedestrian deaths and that officials will “look at what fines are appropriate.”
