NORFOLK, Va.  — A former postal carrier in Virginia Beach has been sentenced to one day in prison for stealing mail.

The Virginian-Pilot  reports 26-year-old Raynard R. Heckstall of Norfolk also was ordered in federal court Thursday to perform 200 hours of community service and pay restitution.

The U.S. Postal Service began an investigation after customers on Heckstall’s assigned route complained about missing and opened mail. Court records show that among the items taken were gift and greeting cards, cash and personal property.

Video surveillance set up by the Postal Service showed Heckstall opening mail in his postal vehicle while on his route. Video surveillance taken at a department store showed Heckstall and a friend redeeming gift cards.
