Largo, MD — The Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County recently awarded two Community Impact Grants (CIG) to community-based organizations to help implement innovative projects in the County.

The first grant, in the amount of $16,110, was awarded to the Neighborhood Design Center to build a digital and garden toolbox which will increase their capacity for neighborhood beautification countywide.  The Neighborhood Design Center is a non-profit organization which responds to community needs by offering a range of services that are currently not available or are too costly to community groups and non-profits in the Prince George’s County area – including conceptual building and site plans, preliminary feasibility studies and cost estimates, neighborhood master plans, and community development guidance.

The second grant, in the amount of $50,000, was awarded to the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation (CDC) for a capital improvement project that will assist in the rehabilitation and conversion of a two-story cottage into usable office space.  The Hyattsville CDC manages and facilitates collaborative economic and community development projects and since its inception, has spearheaded local community visioning and strategic planning, facilitated small business and mixed-use development, and has built local government capacity through construction management. Last September, Eco City Farms received a $50,000 Community Impact Grant for an urban agriculture project.

“In many instances, a small infusion of capital dollars can take a community project from the planning phase to implementation,” says Howard W. Ways, Executive Director of the Redevelopment Authority. “Community Impact Grants help organizations build their capacity and strengthen their communities.”

Grants must be used for capital purposes such as the purchase of equipment and materials. Grants cannot be used for operations, salaries or personnel. Proposed projects must fall into one of two categories: Neighborhood Beautification or Environment or Natural Resources and Sustainability. Grants can only be used for capital expenses related to the implementation of a community based project.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until such time the grant funds have all been spent.   Currently, there is $133,900 remaining in the CIG budget for future awards.
