President Obama Addresses Employment Head On With Interactive One Team

Earlier this week our sister sites, “Hello Beautiful“, “NewsOne” and “The Urban Daily” participated in hosting an interactive conversation about the state of the union with top Aides in the White House. The discussion ended with a surprise visit from the President answering questions directly for over 15 minutes.

The forum, titled “Open for Questions with Interactive One,” featured various administration officials discussing how the administration’s polices have affected and will affect the Black community, taking questions from the Interactive One network sites, TheGrio.com, and BlackPlanet.com.

President Obama charged all in attendance to get the truth out about the state of employment and what is happening across the nation.

Though it’s difficult to be optimistic about the bleak job market when unemployment is stuck at around 9.1%, but a survey just released by employment services firm ManpowerGroup offers hope for job seekers in many places around the country.

The survey reveals that the metropolitan area with the most optimistic forecast of all for hiring this fall is San Antonio, Texas, and there’s also the good news that employers in 45 states expect the bleak employment picture to perk up. In fact, hiring managers in dozens of metropolitan areas anticipate considerable increases in hiring, while others present a darker forecast.

In fact, Baltimore-Towson employers are expressing similar sentiments. Twenty percent of that metro area’s hiring managers anticipate a bright fourth quarter. Meanwhile, 7% expect to decrease their payrolls, 71% anticipate no change and 2% are uncertain. This yields a net employment outlook of 13% and positions the Maryland metropolis as the third best place for finding a job this fall. Greensboro-High Point, N.C., St. Louis and Tulsa enjoy the same rank.

Part of the fact is that America at large feels that lawmakers are acting like spoiled brats. Here is a recent poll taken during the debt ceiling discussion:

Al Qaeda Threatens Obama, Obama’s Grandmother

Security has been beefed up around the Kenyan home of President Obama’s grandmother Sarah Obama after an Al Qaeda group sent threats against her following the death of Osama bin Laden, who, according to his confiscated dairies, plotted on ways to kill the president.

According to ABC News, the threat allegedly came from Al Shabaab, a Somalian al Qaeda affiliate.

Obama, Big Business Team To Aid Entrepreneurs

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — A campaign to promote new businesses and create jobs, bringing together government agencies and businesses such as Intel and IBM, was launched Monday by the Obama administration.

The Startup America Partnership aims to support overall entrepreneurship — with a focus on high-growth, job-creating industries such as clean energy, medicine, advanced manufacturing and information technology.

From the private sector, the partnership said Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) committed $200 million to expand startup investment, and IBM (IBM, Fortune 500) will invest $150 million in business mentoring programs.

Also participating are Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500), which is investing $4 million, and Facebook, which launched a series of mentoring events across the country.

On the government side, the administration offered a handful of policy suggestions and new investments.

The White House said the administration’s new fiscal 2012 budget will propose permanently eliminating capital gains taxes on investments in qualifying small businesses. The tax elimination was introduced as a temporary provision in September, but this new proposal would make the tax break permanent.

The Startup America Partnership will be chaired by Steve Case, the co-founder of America Online who now heads an organization that invests in innovative people and ideas.

What does it do for me and my idea? With so many organizations, agencies and companies involved, the partnership’s benefits come in a handful of different shapes and sizes.

Here are some examples of how the partnership intends to make capital more accessible and put entrepreneurs in touch with a support system.

– The Small Business Administration will commit $2 billion as a match to private sector investment over the next 5 years through the existing Small Business Investment Companies (SBIC) program. SBICs are licensed, privately owned-and-managed investment firms that have helped companies such as Intel and FedEx (FDX, Fortune 500) get off the ground.

– Facebook, which was a start-up itself only a few years ago, has pledged to launch Startup Days, a series of 12 to 15 events across the country. The events will offer training in new technologies, guest speakers from Facebook, and networking opportunities, among other resources.

– The Department of Veterans Affairs will start two new programs to help vets launch high-growth businesses: an interactive website walking entrepreneurs through the various resources available to them, and a business incubator in Waukesha, Wis. (Read More)

This is a very proud holiday tradition. Snow or shine, in good times and in periods of hardship, folks like you have gathered with presidents to light our national tree. Now, it hasn’t always gone off without a hitch. On one occasion, two sheep left the safety of the nativity scene and wandered into rush-hour traffic. That caused some commotion.

Often, the ceremony itself has reflected the pain and sacrifice of the times. There were years during the Second World War when no lights were hung, in order to save electricity. In the days following Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill joined President Roosevelt to wish our nation a Happy Christmas even in such perilous days.

But without fail, each year, we have gathered here. Each year we’ve come together to celebrate a story that has endured for two millennia. It’s a story that’s dear to Michelle and me as Christians, but it’s a message that’s universal: A child was born far from home to spread a simple message of love and redemption to every human being around the world.
