ST. LOUIS  – Singer David Peaston, who had a string of R&B hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has died, his family said Thursday.

Peaston, 54, died Wednesday of complications from diabetes, his niece, Neuka Mitchell said.

Peaston was born into a St. Louis family with deep musical roots. His mother, gospel singer Martha Bass, was one of the Clara Ward Singers. His older sister, Fontella Bass, is a noted singer whose single “Rescue Me” reached No. 1 on R&B charts and No. 4 on pop single charts in 1965.

The first time Bell junior Diana Castillo told her friends she was leaving class a little early for bowling practice, they responded with puzzled looks: What? There’s a bowling team?

“People question if it’s even a sport sometimes,” Castillo said.

For D.C. Public Schools this winter, however, bowling is a varsity sport for the first time — and only for girls. It’s part of an effort by the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association to boost girls’ participation in sports and improve its compliance with Title IX, the law mandating gender equity at all federally funded institutions.

Today he’s just a D.C. bureaucrat, but come Super Bowl Sunday, David Johnson will be Pizza Hut’s last, best hope to sling pies before kick-off.

The chain held a contest challenging customers to come up with a catchy new jingle. Johnson, 31, a switchboard operator for the Department of Defense, penned a 30-second tune praising the Hut’s delivery time over that of its rivals: “Take it from your boy / if you order from those places / you’ll just get annoyed.” He won, and the company flew him to a recording studio in Santa Monica, where he rapped over a rhythm track sampled from vintage Pizza Hut spots. The ad will run in a prime slot just before the game begins.

A judge ordered that former NBA star Allen Iverson’s (watch his highlights) bank account be garnished in order to pay more than $850,000 to a jeweler (where?). The store initially sued Iverson in 2010 for not paying a $375,000 bill (why was he sued for $2.5M?). After he reportedly did not respond, an order was issued for the store to collect the money directly from his account (find out if he’s broke).

There was no way Angelo Dundee was going to miss Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday party.

Muhammad Ali certainly was, but so too was the man who trained him. Journey through the career of Angelo Dundee in pictures.

The genial trainer got to see his old friend, and reminisce about good times. It was almost as if they were together in their prime again, and what a time that was.

Dundee died in his apartment in Tampa, Fla., Wednesday night at the age of 90, and with him a part of boxing died, too.

“Three out of every four people with HIV or AIDS in DC are Black,” said Don Blanchon, executive director of Whitman-Walker. “One in three Black gay or bisexual men in DC has HIV. At Whitman-Walker, a large number of our new HIV diagnoses are among young, gay Black men. Given the state of the epidemic in the Black community, every day in the District of Columbia should be Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.”

“It is vital that Black men and women receive not only ongoing primary medical care but information and education on how to protect themselves from HIV infection,” said Blanchon. “At Whitman-Walker, we can provide them with free HIV testing, education about how to prevent HIV, and medical care if they do have HIV. We want to empower the entire community to protect their health and their lives.”
