Could this be true? An Earthquake in Maryland? Read the story here.

Earthquakes?! We usually only expect to hear about these on the West Coast. Its been quite sometime since the word “earthquake” was muttered on this side of the country but, today was a different story. An earthquake hit Maryland and here’s what Hot Indie News reported:

Maryland- A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Gaithersburg, Maryland, area just after 5 a.m. ET Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The center of the quake was about 20 miles northwest of Washington, the USGS said.

The earthquake was the largest in the area since 1974 — and the first registering above 3.0 on the Richter scale there in that time period, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center.

“This is a significant event for the region,” she said.

About an hour after the quake, Vaughan said more than 5,500 people had reported feeling it across Maryland, in nearby Washington, and in states including West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware.

“It was really loud, like a plane flying really low. I had never felt anything like it,” said Anne Ngunjiri, 30, of Gaithersburg. “I was jolted out of bed. All my neighbors woke up. After it passed, I thought it could be an earthquake, and lay in bed hoping there were no aftershocks.”

Until Friday, the largest earthquake recorded within a 75-kilometer (about 47 miles) radius of Gaithersberg since 1974 was a 2.7-magnitude quake in 1993, Vaughan said.

But geologically speaking, she said it was “not completely unexpected” for a 3.6-magnitude quake to hit there.

“Occasionally these things do happen even east of the Rockies, even though it’s not really on a plate boundary where we expect earthquakes… Faults do exist from when the continent was forming. There are small faults that do exist within this area,” she said.

Vaughan said major structural damage was unlikely, but people may experience aftershocks for the next day, or even a week or two after the quake.

Washington’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency said no injuries or property damage had been reported.

The last earthquake in Maryland occurred on October 8, 2007, according to the USGS website. It was a 1.7-magnitude quake about 5 miles northwest of Baltimore. For more information click here!

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

In the book of Genesis, God set up a system of seedtime and harvest. Everything God does starts with a seed. The Bible also tells us that He gives seed to the sower. In other words, if you are a person who has a desire to bless others and sow seed, God will make sure you have plenty to give. Notice in today’s verse what happens when we generously sow seed—we increase more! Just like planting a seed in the natural brings an abundant harvest, planting a spiritual seed brings an abundant harvest as well. You can’t out give God. The scripture says that He will pour out blessings on you that you can barely contain.

God’s blessings go way beyond the financial realm. He wants you to have blessed relationships, good health, and a happy career. Why don’t you take a step of faith today and look for ways to start sowing. What do you have in your hand? Can you start by giving a smile and sowing joy? Do you have five dollars to help someone else at the gas pump? Choose to be blessing and watch how God brings increase in every area of your life.

But we have to remember that life is not really about the destination, it’s about how we live all along the way. It’s about the path we’re on that shines brighter and brighter.

Once you accomplish one dream, God will give you another. When you overcome one challenge, there will be another. There is always another mountain to climb. If we make the mistake of just living for the destination, we’ll look up one day and realize we’ve missed out on the biggest part of life because most of life is routine. Most of us get up every morning, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed and do it again. There are very few mountaintops where you graduate from school, or you get married, or have a child, or go on vacation. The high times are few and far between. Don’t get stuck living for the mountaintops. Learn to enjoy the path you’re on. Learn to enjoy the people in your life. Learn to enjoy the simple blessings of walking in the path the Lord has prepared for you.

The D.C. Superior Court has already issued more than 2,000 marriage licenses.

VIA WTOP:

Same-sex marriage has only been legal in the District for about two months, but the city is on track to set a record for marriages this year.

The D.C. Superior Court has already issued more than 2,000 marriage licenses.

“To put that in perspective,” Judge William Jackson says. “All of last year was about 3,000.”

In the first three months of 2010, the court processed 376 applications. Since March 3 — when gay marriage became legal in the District — the marriage license office has received 2,082 applications.

Based on the early numbers, the District is on target to issue four times as many marriage licenses this year as they did in 2009.

The court does not break down the number of same-sex and opposite-sex applications.

The increase means the court is seeing a cash windfall because fees for the application and the licenses come to $45. That’s tens of thousands of dollars the court is collecting that it didn’t count on.

The D.C. Department of Transportation unveiled an unusual pedestrian crossing in Chinatown Wednesday, just a few blocks from the Verizon Center.

VIA WTOP:

The new “barnes dance” crossing at one of the busiest intersections in the District is being met with some mixed reviews.

The D.C. Department of Transportation unveiled this unusual pedestrian crossing in Chinatown Wednesday, just a few blocks from the Verizon Center.

Here’s how a “barnes dance” works: Traffic is allowed to cycle through the intersection in each direction (just like any other normal intersection), but then all vehicular traffic is stopped completely. Pedestrians are then allowed to cross in any direction they want — including diagonally.

The “barnes dance” in the District has a different take: Pedestrians will be allowed to cross with the green light and the walk signal (as they normally would), even as vehicular traffic flows through. In a traditional “barnes dance” intersection, cars and pedestrians take turns. Cars go and then pedestrians have the longer cycle.

“It’s confusing,” said one man as he reached the other side of the street.

Others seemed timid about stepping into the middle of the intersection. That’s why DDOT has deployed traffic control officers at the intersection to guide pedestrians.

“Without those people telling us what to do, I wouldn’t have known,” said another man.

DDOT Director Gabe Klein was monitoring traffic flow Wednesday, and is already talking about a couple of tweaks. For instance, putting a pedestrian symbol at the corners of the intersection to let people know they can walk across diagonally.

“I think we’ll get used to it,” another pedestrian said. “I think it is a good thing.”

“There is going to be a period of getting used to it,” says DDOT Pedestrian Program Coordinator George Branyan. “We have more pedestrians than vehicles at this intersection. The conflicts between the turning drivers and the pedestrians legally in the crosswalk has always been a problem.”

Aside from having to wait a while longer, another major change drivers will notice is that with the new pattern, you can no longer make any turns at the intersection.

VIA THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER:

The extra dime per trip that Metro began to charge riders this spring isn’t making up for the emergency budget shortfall it was supposed to help solve, according to a new Metro report.

In fact, the agency says it has an even bigger hole than it forecast. Instead of a $40 million shortfall for the entire year, the latest monthly financial report shows Metro is $54.2 million below budget, with three months left to make up the difference.

Metro began to charge 10 cents extra per trip on Feb. 28 with the idea that the emergency surcharge could bring in $9.6 million through June to help make up for faltering ridership, according to the report. The transit agency planned to scrape together the rest of the $40 million through other funds.

But the winter snowstorms made matters worse. Metro shut down aboveground train service for several days in February and closed early on others.

Then, in March — the first full month of the surcharge — riders’ fares brought in $1.4 million less than anticipated, the report says. March showed somewhat stronger rail ridership, climbing above the same month of 2009. But the report credits one extra weekday, rather than a surge of riders, for causing much of the boost. Even so, it wasn’t enough to meet the monthly budget estimates.

VIA THE WASHINGTON POST:

A substitute Loudoun County school bus driver was charged with simple assault after allegedly striking a student who refused to turn down his iPod, authorities said.

Lavangila N. McKissic, 35, of Round Hill, was driving students through Purcellville about 4 p.m. on April 27 when she repeatedly asked a student, who was not using headphones, to turn down his MP3 player, sheriff’s spokesman Kraig Troxell said. The 15-year-old boy, a student at Harmony Intermediate School, didn’t.

Witnesses reported that McKissic stopped the bus, grabbed the iPod from the teenager and struck him in the head, Troxell said. He said the teenager was not injured.

Troxell said another student on the bus reported the incident the following day. He said the School Resource Officer launched an investigation.

A schools spokesman said McKissic has been suspended. He said students are allowed to have MP3 players on the bus provided the music is quiet.

VIA THE WASHINGTON POST:

A Southeast Washington man was arrested Tuesday and charged in the death of the 18-year-old D.C. Council intern whose body was found in woods Sunday, D.C. police said.

Omare Ishmael Cotton, 28, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Alonte Sutton, police said. Sutton, a Ballou High School senior, was killed Saturday in the 200 block of Newcomb Street SE.

In announcing the arrest, police gave few details. However, D.C. Council member Michael A. Brown (I-At Large), for whom Sutton had worked, said he thinks that police quickly obtained a “pretty good bead” on a suspect.

The shooting occurred “in broad daylight,” Brown said, and there were “several witnesses.”

Sutton had worked last summer in Brown’s office, and Brown has described him as “a super kid.” Brown had recommended him for a one-year internship this year.

Family members have said that Sutton was killed after declining to give a ride to a man’s girlfriend.

The victim’s grandfather, Wayne Sutton, said witnesses told him that Alonte Sutton and the man had exchanged words Friday night.

Tires on Alonte Sutton’s car had been slashed, and he was changing them Saturday afternoon when a gunman encountered him.

The gunman began shooting, pursuing Sutton into a wooded area in the 200 block of Newcomb Street, according to accounts.

The victim’s body was found Sunday in a wooded ravine just east of Interstate 295, and not far from the St. Elizabeths Hospital campus.

Police said Sutton had been shot several times.

D.C. police have opened an internal investigation into their response to the shooting, after witnesses said officers did not thoroughly investigate at the scene. The intern’s body was not found until Sunday.

No street address was given Tuesday for the suspect and no information could be immediately obtained about links between the suspect and the victim.

Brown expressed uncertainty Tuesday about whether all the details of what led to Sutton’s death would come to light.

“I don’t know if we’ll ever know,” Brown said. There are “too many different stories.”

He said he had spoken with Sutton’s relatives and “a lot of people are pleased” that an arrest has been made. But, he said, people “are still going through the grieving process.”

VIA THE WASHINGTON POST:

D.C. sports fans may have to pay a little more to watch their teams next fiscal year, the D.C. Wire reports.

(Nationals fans, you’re exempt.)

A D.C. Council committee is recommending the adoption of a new tax on sporting events to generate an estimated $3.7 million in revenue to fund city recreation programs for fiscal 2011.

Any admission ticket costing $25.02 or more would tack on an extra $1. Tickets valued at $25.01 or less would cost a fan an additional 50 cents. The tax would not apply to tickets under $10.01, according to a written recommendation of the Committee on Libraries, Parks and Recreation.
