If you travel about 16 miles and spend 30 to 35 minutes on your commute, congratulations! That means you’re about average.
The tri-annual “State of the Commute Report,” put together by the region’s Commuter Connections program, is providing a snapshot into commuter habits.
Twenty-five percent of people say their commute is worse now compared to a year ago, while 62 percent say it is about the same.
Also, telecommuting and transit use is on the rise, while driving alone is on the decline.
“A lot of folks are using alternative modes [to get to work], and that helps because if those individuals were on the road, it would be much worse than it is today,” says Nicholas Ramfos, director of Commuter Connections.
Meanwhile, Ramfos says many long-distance commuters aren’t complaining that their trip takes a long time.
“Some people have said that is their alone time or quality time. So for those folks, it may be OK for them to be spending more than an hour commuting.”
The overwhelming majority of commuters who said that their commute has become more difficult, said the route they take has become more congested.
