Thus far the top ten black gospel songs of 2011 have been outstanding.

There have been a few songs that have been standouts.

# 10 Kirk Franklin “I Smile”- Is Back with a track that guarantees that you will appreciate everything in your life. He just finished hosting a 4th stellar season of Sunday Best.

# 9 Troy Sneed My Heart Says Yes- Troy Sneed was originally known as a producer but now leads the pack with a song that is not only uplifting but inspiring.

Music World Gospel Recording artist Le’Andria Johnson’s debut CD, The Awakening of Le’Andria Johnson debuts at #1 on multiple music charts, including both the Billboard Top Gospel Album and the Top Christian/Gospel Album charts.

The Awakening of Le’Andria Johnson also debuts at #1 on the Christian Music Trade Association’s (CMTA) Current Gospel Overall chart. The CD enters at #3 on Billboard’s Independent Record Label chart, #21 on the Billboard Overall Digital Albums chart and #26 on Billboard 200.

Le’Andria’s new single, “Jesus,” lands at #23 this week on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Song chart and was #1 Most Added Single with 11 adds. “Jesus” was Billboard’s #1 Most Increased Spins, #1 on the Most Added and Most Increased Spins List on the Gospel Indicator charts.

This season’s airing of Sunday Best broke all records. Over 2.1 million viewers tuned in and the show ranks as the #1 telecast in franchise history. Le’Andria’s star-turn on Sunday Best was not an “overnight success” story. For the 29-year-old, twice divorced mother of three, it has been a long and often arduous journey to the spotlight in the gospel music industry. An accomplished singer and songwriter and an anointed praise and worship leader, Le’Andria was born in Orlando, Florida, but moved to the small town of Palatka, Florida, where her father Dr. G.A. Johnson, Sr., served as presiding Bishop of the Head Quarters (HQ) Ministries. She began singing at her father’s church at the age of six and became praise and worship leader when she was 16. At 17, she had her first performance before a major audience when she sang for 8,000 people at a conference sponsored by gospel legend Pastor Shirley Caesar. Yes! Tyler Perry Is The Richest Man In Hollywood

According to Forbes, producer and actor Tyler Perry is the richest man in Hollywood.

Perry, who made $130 million in Hollywood last year, made his fortune through the movies and TV shows he’s produced.

Perry is followed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Steven Speilberg.

Forbes reports:

Thanks to five movies he has cranked out over the past two years and two TV series, Perry earned $130 million between May 2010 and May 2011, which ranks him as the highest-earning man in entertainment for that time period.

Shocking! 27 Percent Of African Americans Live Below Poverty Line

The number of Americans living under the poverty line in the U.S. hit a 52-year-high, according to the new U.S. Census.

The report, “Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2010,” showed that close to 15.1 percent of all Americans now live below the poverty line. Though the most shocking statistic of the study is the percentage of African Americans living below the poverty line, which currently sits at a whopping 27.4 percent.

The Huffington Post reports:

The number of blacks living under the poverty line — which is $11,139 for an individual in 2010 — rose to 10.7 million, up 1.6 percent. In all, 27.4 percent of blacks were living in poverty.

Median household income in 2010 was $49,445, a dip of 2.3 percent from the previous year. The median income for black households in 2010 was $32,068, down 3.2 percent from $33,122. The median income for white households also dropped, to a lesser degree, from $52,717 to $51,846, a decline of 1.7 percent. (Median income for Asian and Hispanic households was not statistically different.)

Book Claims Sarah Palin Had One Night Stand With NBA’s Glen Rice

A new book about Sarah Palin claims that she had a one night stand with former NBA player Glen Rice.

The book claims that Palin had sex with Rice during a college basketball tournament in Alaska in 1987 while Rice was playing for Michigan, and Palin was a sports reporter for a TV station in Alaska.

The National Enquirer reports:

A publishing source told The ENQUIRER that McGinniss claims Sarah had a “fetish” for black men at the time and he quotes a friend as saying Sarah had “hauled (Rice’s) ass down.”

A source unrelated to the book told The ENQUIRER, Todd was very much in the picture at the time and the couple married just nine months later.

In the book, McGinniss quotes Rice as confirming the one-night stand.

Television personality and author Tavis Smiley recently sat down with TheGrio to talk about his upcoming PBS special “Too Important to Fail,” which examines the Black student education gap, and to address his criticsim of President Barack Obama.

During the interview, Smiley is unapologetic about his criticism of Obama saying, “My job has always been to hold presidents accountable to the best interest of all Americans but specifically and unapologetically for [African-Americans].”

“It’s just funny to me that people get more riled up and more excited and more angry about what I may or may not say about the president than they do about the crisis in black boys. If Negroes could get half as mad at what black boys are enduring as they do when Cornel West or Tavis Smiley says something, we might get something done.”

Are Food Stamps Subsidizing Black America’s Fast Food Affliction?

Since the early 1960s, federally-funded food stamps have subsidized America’s food insecurity problem, providing support for some 17 million people in the last year alone.

As the program has grown in recent years, everyone from farmer’s markets to fast food chains are vying for a slice of the $65 billion, as more people are demanding that harsher restrictions be placed on food stamp purchases.

Lifting Americans out of joblessness and poverty is a complicated task, and the problems associated with unhealthy diets and excessive weight affect all of us. The unemployed shouldn’t be forced to pay the price for our collective failures, particularly when the well-to-do are still sipping their cokes and eating their cakes.
