WASHINGTON – The Washington Teachers’ Union, which represents over 4,000 D.C. school teachers, elected a new president Tuesday.

Nathan Saunders defeated incumbent George Parker by a vote of 556 to 480.

Parker was union president during the negotiations of the latest teachers’ contract, which saw a teacher assessment system put in place that led to over 100 educators being released during the summer.

Along with former D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and Mayor Adrian Fenty, Parker is the third high-ranking official involved with school reform to be voted out of office.
